Seasons Tweetings

A few weeks ago Filrd of Beersay announced his intention to have an online Twissup dedicated to Christmas/Winter Beers. I’ve always been up for having a few beers in the e-company of like-minded geeks so I instantly said I’d take part. I decided that I’d aim for 6 beers and half of them would be from traditional breweries and half of them would be from breweries that are generally viewed as being forward thinking. I also decided that while I was drinking each beer I would listen to an album that was released in 2012 (but didn’t feature in my Best of 2012 blog post). The final decision I made was to drink the beers in ascending ABV order (from left to right in the photo below) and to listen to the albums in release date order*. All that was left was to get pished and listen to some top tunes…

* Please note: In my rush for immortality I played The North Sea Scrolls when I should’ve played Love This Giant… sorry

ROSEY NOSEY by BATEMANS
paired with
LITTLE EPISODES by IAN McCNABB

Nose: Recently crushed berries on the threshold of a long-unaired cloakroom

Taste: Similar to the cheap chocolate that is in my Avengers advent calendar but with an added lick of strawberry sauce sweetness. There’s nothing particularly unpleasant about it but it hardly makes you wanna send a postcard to your granny declaring its greatness

Sound: McNabb is best experienced live and in person. A solid enough collection of songs but half way through your mind begins to wander and you start lusting for a rousing rendition of Love Is A Wonderful or Understanding Jane

CHRISTMAS CHEER by ARBOR ALES
paired with
HUMAN DON’T BE ANGRY by HUMAN DON’T BE ANGRY

Nose: Cor! A huge bowl of Shreddies smothered in gallons of melted chocolate

Taste: A choco covered mince pie… with an extra sprinkle of xmas Arbor magic

Sound: Electro-Synth-Prog for the Suicidal Generation

OUR SPECIAL ALE 2012 by ANCHOR
paired with
PSYCHEDELIC REVOLUTION by JULIAN COPE

Nose: Crazy! Pine needles and cough sweeties… much like the doctor’s waiting room on xmas eve but without the lingering stench of despair and self-pity

Taste: It slowly builds and builds but into what?!? An xmas coca-cola for growed-ups… aye, that’ll do pig

Sound: I used to love the Cope but he’s become a bit of a parody of himself in recent years… this is his first album that’s made me think ‘You know what, mate? I don’t fucking believe you. You’re having a fucking giraffe, ain’t ya!’ To (almost) quote the Violent Femmes: he’s living a lie cos he can’t tell the truth. Avoid the suspect lyrics and it isn’t actually too bad but you can’t help feeling Cope and his mates could knock out such an album in an afternoon without really trying too hard. I’ve waffled on too long…

PICKLED SANTA by HOP BACK
paired with
SON OF A BITCHES BREW by ACID MOTHERS MELTING & THE MELTING PARAISO UFO

Nose: Not what I was expecting: dirty deep fat fryer oil

Taste: Nothing much at all…

Sounds: Feedback, effect laden guitars, more feedback and jazz from hell. If it doesn’t totally do your head after 3 minutes you’ll love it… every now and again

CHRISTMAS ALE by SHEPHERD NEAME
paired with
THE NORTH SEA SCROLLS

Nose: Golf balls in the melting xmas eve snow

Taste: The dusty dash of a Vauxhall Astra as it drives through Berkshire

Sound: You haven’t heard it? Then go fucking buy it!

PARADOX CHRISTMAS 2012 by BREWDOG
paired with
LOVE THIS GIANT by DAVID BYRNE & ST VINCENT

Nose: A gangbang with a shitload of Californian raisins

Taste: A mouthful of treacle toffee as you watch Girls Aloud videos

Sound: Talking Heads if Tina Weymouth had pulled her fucking weight… but she did! Quirky but not annoyingly so. A fantastic end to a grand evening of beer & music

  1. I seriously laughed my bollies off reading this Mark, some inspired descriptions in the tasting notes, my particular fave being that of the Anchor aromas. Thanks for joining in and in particular writing this up, brilliant!
